British Open Champ Lowry Commits to Play in the 2020 Honda Classic
PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL — Irish professional Shane Lowry has become the second 2019 Major Championship winner to commit to the 2020 Honda Classic.
Lowry, who won the British Open at Portrush last July, has joined PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka – the No. 1 player in the world – in the field for the PGA TOUR event which will be held February 24-March 1 at PGA National Resort & Spa.
Lowry’s victory at Portrush was monumental in more ways than one. It was the first time since 1951 that The Open had returned to Ireland. That the tournament was won by an Irishman only made it more special.
Lowry holed putts from everywhere en route to a 63 on Saturday that allowed him to build a four-stroke margin over Tommy Fleetwood heading into the final round. His final margin of victory was six strokes.
Fans rushed onto the 18th fairway as soon as Lowry hit his approach shot to the final green in scenes reminiscent of Opens past. Irish flags fluttered in the crowd as the Irish fans shouted Lowry’s name in celebration.
“I didn’t even know if I was good enough to win a Major,” said Lowry. “I knew I was able to put a few days together. I just went out there and tried to give my best. And look, I’m here now, a Major champion. I can’t believe I’m saying it, to be honest.”
Lowry is now on a quest to follow up that 2019 accomplishment with a berth on Europe’s Ryder Cup team this fall. He also comes to The Classic in The Palm Beaches looking for his first PGA TOUR victory since the 2015 WGC – Bridgestone Invitational.
